You can't go to Japan and just walk around temples all day, well, you can and you'd still have a great time, but to really soak in some of the culture you gotta hit up a ryokan. This was probably the nicest place I've ever stayed in and our room had it's own private onsen (geothermally heated spring water.)
The one we stayed in was very pricey but it was well worth it.
